As part of our ongoing effort to remove redundant tracks from the playlist, Track 06-“The Enterprise” has been deleted from the track list above.
However, it is still available on the Frontiers (Jerry Goldsmith) album.
“Why did you remove it from the original score album instead of the compilation?” you ask. Both are excellent recordings and were encoded in Lossless format here on SST. The scales were tipped in favor of Frontiers because in our opinion (and that of many reviewers), this is Jerry Goldsmith’s definitive performance and interpretation of his signature sci-fi works. The Royal Scottish National Orchestra is conducted by the composer himself, so the performances are authoritative and in some cases better than the originals.

James Newton Howard has composed many wonderful film scores, but this is one of my all-time favorites. It has a kind of gentle but irresistable power, just like the film. And it takes its time, also like the movie. I like that quality in both the film and the score, although I know that others do not; many find it boring and annoying. Ah, well ... de gustibus non disputandum est, as the Old Romans used to say. ("Questions of taste are not debatable.") I really believe, however, that if most people slowed down and relaxed and allowed both this film and the score to tell their stories at their own pace and in their own way, they would be swept away by the beauty of both the film and the score, which are both exceptional.

In each of the arts, there are certain works that are foundational. In the field of film music, this is one of them, IMO -- just as in the genre of swashbuckling adventure films, this movie is one of them. Korngold's score is simply the perfect match for what appears on the screen. Despite the distance in both time and culture, this score still has the power to move and thrill us. Bountiful blessings upon Molossus for donating it to SST!
