Great Composers: Georges Delerue - Georges Delerue
Comment on Platoon - Theme
By: Twopop
Date: 22 Feb 2008
Rating:

One of the real treasures on this compilation album is Track 01 - "Platoon - Theme" by Georges Delerue. It was never heard in the film.

Delerue's score was largely replaced when director Oliver Stone decided to go with Samuel Barber's "Adagio For Strings" throughout most of the film (along with many pop songs of the era.) Barber's famous piece had been used as a temp track during the editing of the film.

Although you will notice a great similarity to "Adagio For Strings" in this theme, it is unmistakably written and conducted by the great Georges Delerue.

Scarlet Letter, The - John Barry, Samuel Barber
Comment on Adagio For Strings

Track 06 - "Agnus Dei (Based on Adagio For Strings)" by Samuel Barber.

This is a gorgeous a cappella choral rendition, performed by the Robert Shaw Chorale. The tempo is slightly slower than the more familiar orchestral versions, timing in at 10:49.

Do yourself a favor - put on some headphones, sit back, relax in a quiet room, and drink in every luscious, non-vibrato, clear as a bell note in this exquisite piece.

Track 02 - "Adagio For Strings" (9:00) by Samuel Barber has been removed from this compilation CD. An almost identical version of this piece can be found on the album Elephant Man - Track 10. They are both orchestral works running about the same length (9:00, 9:27).

True, this performance by the New York Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Thomas Schippers is probably one of the best ever recorded. It is well known that Schippers was a renowned interpreter of the music of Samuel Barber, and had a great affinity for all his works.

Because of SST's policy to reduce the number of redundant (duplicate) tracks in the playlist, we had to choose between Schippers' version and the Andre Previn/LSO track on the Elephant Man album. I have chosen to keep the latter. The reasoning is that one is on a film score album, as opposed to a classical compilation album.

The good news is that you can still listen to the Thomas Schippers "Adagio For Strings" on our sister station classical Adagio.FM when it is officially launched soon.

Homeworld - Samuel Barber, Paul Ruskay
Comment on Adagio For Strings
By: Twopop
Date: 22 Feb 2008
Rating:

Samuel Barber's moving "Adagio For Strings" has been used in many films, several of which are represented in our playlist (Elephant Man, Platoon, The Scarlet Letter, and a compilation.)

Here we hear it in a video game on Track 02. This performance is unique in that it is performed by an a cappella choir, rather than orchestra, and at a faster tempo than most versions.

Elephant Man, The - John Morris
Comment on Adagio For Strings
By: Twopop
Date: 22 Feb 2008
Rating:

John Morris composed and conducted the score for Elephant Man, performed by The National Philharmonic Orchestra in London.

Track 10 - "Adagio For Strings" (by Samuel Barber) is performed by The London Symphony Orchestra under the baton of Andre Previn. The piece is heard here in its entirety.

Barber's famous work, although written in 1936, blends seemlessly with Morris' score, which captures the essence of the 1880's, locations, and true story of John Merrick.

Platoon - Georges Delerue, Samuel Barber
Missing tracks

Eight of the tracks on this album are source music - songs Oliver Stone chose as background music representative of the era. Tracks 02-05 and 07-10 are not in the playlist.

Composer Georges Delerue composed a score for Platoon. But Stone had used Samuel Barber's moving "Adagio For Strings" as the temp track during the editing of the film, and asked him to use it for inspiration. In the end, though, Delerue's score was discarded and Barber's soulful work was used instead all throughout the film.

Track 11-"Adagio For Strings" (6:51) is an orchestral shortened version of Barber's original work, performed by The Vancouver Symphony Orchestra. It begins with the sound of helicopters and Charlie Sheen's narrative for the first 80 seconds. We have included it because it is as defining to this film as Wagner's "Ride Of The Valkyries" is to the helicopters and napalm scene in Apocolypse Now.

Track 01-"The Village" (Adagio For Strings) has been removed because it is a very short version of the same work, again with the sound of gunfire and burning.
