Panu Aaltio - Home Of Dark Butterflies, The
Touching Foreign Film Introduces Great New Composer
By: jadedtitan
Date: 19 May 2009
Rating:

Panu Aaltio debuts with this score, being his first solo project for film. He is able to touch the listener with his music, using both strings and solo piano to bring out the minimalistic style that gives such heart to the characters represented. The film focuses on an island and the boys sent there because they have social and emotional issues, the main character being the newly arrived Juhani. While the movie revolves around him, giving us flashbacks as to what happened in his childhood, the music also gives way to the emotions and feelings Juhani experiences while on the island.

The first theme, played out in various songs mostly by a solo piano, give the feeling of happiness, of great possibilities and portrays when things on the island go well for the boys or when Juhani finally finds a resolution to his problem. That theme can be heard in Big Plans, The Butterfly Project, The Boys Decide to Stay, Glimpse of Happiness and Forgiveness. It is such a beautiful theme, huge emotions felt and it is the highlight of this wonderful score.

Main Title, Juhani's Great Loss, Memories in Water, Alone, The Farewell, The Past Revealed,We Can Be Just as Fragile, Point of No Return and Saying Goodbye consist of the other theme found in this score. A simple theme, the minimalistic style, of a few notes repeated but which build up to crescendos, adding instruments to reach that high peaked point in each song. This is more associated with troubles, with the hard choices and the failings of the boys on the island.

While I could put this score on repeat for some time, the way Aaltio uses so little to portray so much makes for a wonderful listening experience if you enjoy emotive yet simple and wonderfully beautiful music.

Instrumental, Neil Patrick Harris, Joss Whedon & Zack Whedon Jed Whedon (...) - Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog
A short, diverting musical
By: LadyInque
Date: 11 May 2009
Rating:

This is the soundtrack from a mini-musical which premiered on the internet in the summer of 2008. As of this writing, it can be seen here. It tells the story of Dr. Horrible, a wanna-be supervillain. He's just trying to change the world, while fighting his nemesis, the fatuous Captain Hammer. Dr. Horrible wants to impress the Evil League of Evil, as well as Penny, the cute girl from the laundromat.

This musical was written by Joss Whedon, who gave us the Buffy musical. So if you hate that, or hate musicals, then don’t even bother. The songs are pleasant. I like them, but I think they’re definitely more enjoyable, maybe even affecting, if you’ve seen the movie and thus have some context. The cast is pretty good. Neil Patrick Harris is a Broadway veteran, and Nathan Fillion blusters wonderfully. One favorite is Captain Hammer’s “Everyone’s a Hero,” which is a banal melody with biting lyrics. Of course, if you just want an instrumental, there’s always the credits.

Request: “My Freeze Ray” “Brand New Day” “My Eyes” “Everyone’s a Hero”
Avoid: “Caring Hands” and “Penny’s Song” since Felicia Day is clearly the weakest singer, and the songs are a snore.

Jeff Charbonneau, Mark Snow, Sara B. Charno Mark Snow - X-Files, The Truth And The Light, The
Ambient and creepy; nothing striking.
By: LadyInque

Okay, I’ve had this CD for years and you know what? If you were to ask me for my favorite track, I couldn’t tell you, because none of them make an impression on me. I keep it in my playlist out of loyalty to (the first 5 seasons of) the show, and because the music doesn’t distract me when I’m trying to get work done.

Basically, what you have here is a CD full of synthesizer, with the odd piano or woodwind. Pretty much every track contains a snippet of dialogue from the show, which will either increase the paranoid mood the music is supposed to create, or just annoy you. The track titles are in Latin, which is no help. I renamed all the tracks in my library. Wikipedia can tell you in which episodes the music was used, if that matters. It’s all from the first three seasons; that much I know.

If you want to hear something you know, request “Materia Primoris,” which is the main title theme and should satisfy you. Otherwise, just close your eyes and click, and you’ll get something ambient and creepy. Enjoy.

Stephen Sondheim - Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber Of Fleet Street
A superb musical, adequately sung
By: LadyInque
Date: 10 May 2009
Rating:

I’m a big fan of the Broadway musical upon which this movie was based. It’s a Sondheim musical that’s really more of an opera, in terms of its gory revenge story and the sheer amount of music. At first, I didn’t think I’d like the movie, since so much had been cut. It turns out I was wrong, and I think the film is a fine adaptation indeed.

That said, I do not really care for the soundtrack. Raised as I was on Broadway, I often find movie soundtracks, with their different performing standards, to be dim imitations of Broadway recordings. It’s not even the fault of the singers. Plenty of people have picked on the singing of Johnny Depp and Helena Bonham Carter in this movie. I agree; they’d never survive on Broadway. But this is a movie. These two perform wonderfully on screen. The vocals on their own, in soundtrack form, sound weak to me.

The “Opening Titles” are a karaoke version of “The Ballad of Sweeney Todd,” the connective tissue that holds the scenes in the show together. This is a function it still performs in the movie, just without vocals. Some great songs follow, like “Green Finch and Linnet Bird,” “Johanna,” and “Pretty Women.” These are Sondheim at his more romantic. He’s also known for his brilliant lyrics and complicated musical ideas. The first can be heard of “A Little Priest,” which is a favorite for good reason. “The Worst Pies in London” and “Poor Thing” show off his virtuoso composing.

I like the movie a lot. I can’t get behind the soundtrack 100%, because the weak singing is a distraction to me.

Request: “Opening Titles” “A Little Priest” “Johanna 2” (Track 16)
Avoid: “Alms, Alms” is mostly dialogue and plot. “Epiphany” It’s where Depp is, vocally, most out of his league, and I cringe every time, because it's such a powerful song.
