Patrick Doyle - Eragon
monothematic Doyle-Score
By: cosinusomikron
Date: 12 Dec 2009
Rating:

The Soundtrack of "Eragon" is a typical Patrick Doyle with his unique handwriting, sometimes very similar to his score for "Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire". As Doyle is best, when he's able to act aut his melodical talent, he brings a beautiful main theme to his score. This theme is heard during the entire soundtrack, as heroic Fanfare as well as melancholic elegy. Furthermore, the music is greatly played by the outstanding London Symphony Orchestra. Therefore this album is a colourful fantasy-soundtrack with a great main theme, but sadly it offers nothing more than this one theme and its variations, a deficit caused by the film. The soundtrack is better than the not completely felicitous film in any case, though.

Hans Zimmer - Wings Of A Film, The
Great live performance
By: SiriusCreations
Date: 29 Nov 2009
Rating:

This album contains a very nice live performance of Zimmer's favorite scores. This is recorded at the 2000 Flanders Film Festival ( I wish i was there) and some are even better than the original ones, like Mission: Impossible 2: Nyah And Ethan with marvelous acoustic guitar work by Heitor Pereira.
Lebo M & Keswa's performance on The Lion King: Lea Halalela and Power Of One: Mother Africa brings you really to the African Continent (btw did I mentioned already that I wished to be there in 2000? I know Dutchbat did so ask him about the real experience of this recording)
Well I like every track, so beside the ones I mentioned earlier, just request one that is available.

James Horner, Will Jennings James Horner - Beautiful Mind, A
A Beautiful Score
By: SiriusCreations
Date: 29 Nov 2009
Rating:

I just have listened to this album in my car while driving to and from my work. It is a beautiful score but in every track you will hear the same elements/theme.
In a while when listening to the whole score at once it becomes a tiny little bit annoying.
This score is therefore great to have it here since you can only request one track of the at the time.
"A Kaleidoscope Of Mathematics" has been requested most of the times and it is very good. But try to request one the other tracks as well. If you like "A Kaleidoscope Of Mathematics" you will like every other track.
If you do not mind to hear some vocal songs from time to time then I suggest to request the beautiful song by Charlotte Church All Love Can Be

Danny Elfman - Meet The Robinsons
Fun Disney Film With An Equally Fun Scoring
By: jadedtitan
Date: 18 Nov 2009
Rating:

The film Meet the Robinsons was a cute, touching story of lesser Disney fame. Danny Elfman truly can score about any genre of film, his last big Disney hit was The Nightmare Before Christmas and although this score is not at notable as that, it is still a wonderful score by him that brings out the fun and excitement of our possible future.

The score music begins with the track Prologue, a soft gentle playing out of what will become the main theme through the score. Strings and winds carry the melody with the background orchestra adding fullness to the track. To the Future! is the best track I think on the album, it is fun upbeat and encouraging track you could say. “The future has arrived” is sung out by a chorus in the background, with strings carrying the upbeat feeling. Electronic sounds also infuse the track giving it a futuristic feeling.

The Science Fair is another fun track. Wind and brass instruments dominate, giving it a hurried rushed feeling. A fun chorus also adds to the track leading up to the finished moment at the end. Meeting the Robinsons is a slow meandering feeling song. Strings carry the melody throughout the track, going back to the opening theme at different stages. Goob’s Story is a more sad feeling track, showing the emotion of this character. The chorus adds to the track which plays the main theme in a minor key, giving it that sad downcast feel.

A Family United plays out the main theme on the flute, giving it that happy feel again. It is repeated till it builds at the end giving a feeling of a happy finality. Pop Quiz goes back to the style of the Science Fair track. The chorals giving a light feel to the track, repeating To the Future’s theme and adding that futuristic feel again with a jazzy mood brought through by the drum and brass instruments. It is a montage track, so you feel the passage of time as the track progresses to its crescendo ending.

The Evil Plan starts like Goob’s track, with the minor key theme, giving it that sinister feel. The track evolves out of that theme, adding menacing vocals to the background and ending with a minor note. Doris Has Her Day starts out with the main theme in a happy way, but the song quickly turns to a menacing styled track. This point in the movie, the epitome of the evil plan, the music does well to show the destruction caused. The main theme finds places to interject as hope in the track, in both its major and minor forms. The last track Setting Things Right concludes the musical story, giving an end to Doris. The music plays out the main theme in its variations, adding more variations with the strings. The song ends on a grand note “Keep Moving Forward” the motto of Cornelius Robinson, and a sentiment expressed by Walt Disney himself about his animation and his dreams.

While there is not much score music included on this CD, it is still a good example of Elfman’s work. I like all his variations and I think this music, though not grand or beyond other works, still has its place as a good listen. The movie I love and the music fits it perfectly.

Jason Swinscoe - Les Ailes Pourpres: Le Mystere Des Flamants
Beautiful Music to a Documentary on African Flamingos
By: jadedtitan
Date: 9 Nov 2009
Rating:

This is the score to a British documentary about the Flamingos of Tanzania who breed at Lake Natron and migrate up and down the Rift Valley in Africa. The Cinematic Orchestra is a British group who uses their regular small band members along with the London Metropolitan Orchestra to create a vast intricate scoring that moves the listener and lends to the beauty of the subject.

Opening Titles being the first track of the score lends itself to creating the atmosphere and mood of the score. It starts with the, soon to be familiar, piano and guitar duo with background strings growing louder as the scene opens. Though it uses long drawn out string notes to start, it then goes to the main theme played out on the keyboard in a soft delicate manner. Simplistic yet moving, this theme can define the score even though it is full of intricate variances and changes in other tracks. Arrival of the Birds is my favorite track because it is simply gorgeous. The piano again starts the track but this time the harp plays along as accompaniment. Back and forth they play together until they crescendo with the strings bringing in the fullness and beauty of this track. The strings take over the track with piano as the core theme player still. The track ends with the piano and harp duo playing again, just as it started.

The Dance is a truly unique in this score. It plays out exactly as one would hear a dance, with playful moody drums dominating the track in almost a Latin styled rhythm. Strings provide the main melody for the track, along with some guitar. But drums dominate the track making it a playful tune on this score. Soda goes back to the soft emotion of the other tracks before. It begins with keyboard notes moving into the grand strings bringing in the fullness of the music. Again, simple long notes but they convey the emotion and feeling from the images on the film.

Hatching begins with simple chords on the piano, with soft strings in the background. It is a very emotional song, the beginning of new life. The main theme from the first track is played out on a clarinet, simple notes that then fade back out with the piano again leading the track. Near the end the piano plays out the theme as well, leading to the end of the track crescendo where it finally hatches. Marabou is one of two danger tracks you could say. Every story has its tragedy, animals are never safe from danger permanently. Marabou are a breed of stork that feed on the baby flamingos and this track does a perfect job of creating a sinister atmosphere and a feeling of danger. A bassoon is the lead instrument in creating the danger and scared feeling in the track.

Exodus is another gorgeous track, starting with the solo piano and guitar duo then opening up with the fuller strings in the background. The piano plays out the melody, a cheerful variation of the main theme. Mid way it goes to a simplistic piano chord melody, breaking out into the full orchestra soon after with the beginning melody replayed. Then the piano solo chords are visited again with then ending of the track a grand finale, large orchestra sound with the feeling of happiness and success. Transformation opens with strings playing, giving me the feeling of seeing water move. The piano joins the group playing out the melody, with the main theme being played along in the background by the strings. The piano and strings then crescendos into the Arrival music, giving that feeling of grand purpose and deep beauty that was played out previously. The track then ends with the main theme in all its glorious beauty, grand and epic if it could be called that.

Hyena has a dissonant guitar leading the music, again creating a feeling of danger. Strings in the background create a feeling of tension and hurry lending the listener to know something is not right, the track then crescendos into a dissonant chord. Life of the Bird takes the listener back to the soft quiet melodies of the strings and piano. Strings carry the melody, simple long notes but beautiful in their simplicity. First Light has guitar as the main instrument leading the melody. The strings play softly in the background but the guitar plays in a rough but melodic way building with its simple chords to bring the track to its crescendo then ending with strings playing out the simple melody. Crimson Skies is the Opening Titles track but with Lou Rhodes singing to the music. The lyrics were written by the Cinematic Orchestra and say those things felt through the music in the previous eleven tracks.

I love this score, it is simple but gorgeous. I do not think my words can portray the beauty within, but I hope I at least helped. Highly recommend hearing every track, none disappoints in this reviewer’s opinion.

Thomas Newman, The Inkspots, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (...) - Shawshank Redemption, The
That's the beauty of music. They can't take that away from you!
By: SiriusCreations
Date: 8 Nov 2009
Rating:

Newman made a very nice score. This is also my all time favorite movie adapted from Stephen King's novella Rita Hayworth and the Shawshank Redemption.

The score brings you in the right mood.

Of course the scenes when The Marriage Of Figaro is played and afterwards when Andy came back from the hole says (see my signature and title of this little review) gives a good illustration of survival.

Suds On The Roof is a joy to listen to and like in the scene it brings you in a mood of freedom and hope.

Zihuatanejo is a lovely piece that gives you the wish being elsewhere where life is good and there are no worries.
