Kenji Kawai - Seven Swords
|
Exciting and Poignant at the Same time |
|
When I first came to SST my only familiarity with Kenji Kawai's music was from Ghost in the Shell and other anime. So I knew he could be odd and eclectic, but I didn't know he could be epic.
Seven Swords changed that. This score is epic and like Williams or Zimmer, Kawai creates a motif theme that he builds the rest of the music around. In this case, the Sword Theme. Epic and moving with powerful strings and horns the theme is probably best heard in "Seven Swords' Victory" but it permeates the soundtrack. There is a secondary theme that is lighter and more yearning but unlike the Swords' theme it doesn't have a track that highlights it. But you can hear it in "Flute in Danger."
I find this soundtrack eminently listenable with no track standing out as bad. There are some that aren't as memorable. But that is a rarity. As my test I queued up every track and then set my player on randomize with other STs for the most part I would look up at almost every time this ST played to listen for a few moments before going back to whatever I was doing.
Definitely not a score to miss.

John Powell, Mikael Mutti Carlinhos Brown - Rio
|
nice but standard John Powell score |
|
Written by Thomas Glorieux - Review of the regular release
...
The score has for the record a couple of Latin flavored moments ("Paradise Concern", "Juicy Little Mango", "Motorbike") and a couple of more creative instrumental pieces including bird calls ("Locked Up" (by that delivering us the secondary theme of the score repeated in 9, 14 , 16, 17 and 18) and "Bedtime Flyers" to name a few). Plus when listening to a John Powell score, one can't dismiss the expected rhythm changes (the brief "Locked Up", the delightful energetic "Chained Chase" (Happy Feet revisited), the Latin craziness of "Umbrellas of Rio", "Motorbike", "Bird Flight" and "Heimlich" and the serious action theatrics of "Rio Airport". As expected, Rio has them all.

John Powell - Italian Job, The
|
A fun occasional spin worthy |
|
Written by Thomas Glorieux - Review of the regular release
...
The Italian Job is a fun entry in the John Powell category. It dares to infuse a lot of hard rock in the action tracks, and dares to forget the drum loops in the process. The occasional trumpet and percussion elements remain. But The Italian Job is not per se an action score, it doesn't have a lot of action moments for it to be called an action score. So Powell keeps us entertained with jazzy moments and Paycheck inspired elements instead. Thereby making The Italian Job entertaining for an occasional spin, nothing more, nothing less.

Rob Lane, Rohan Stevenson, James Gosling - Merlin: Series Two

The ‘Finale’ makes it worth it. |
|
Written by William Bard - Review of the regular release
...
James Gosling’s sole contribution to this soundtrack is “Gaius Arraigned”, another excellent example of this show’s fondness for dark choral music. “Farewell to Gwen” is basically a string chorale, where once again a gorgeous solo violin pierces the texture. A solo horn alludes to the Arthur & Guinevere theme, before the violin and a trumpet take the theme to fruition. “The Forged Seal” is another comedic track, with lots of limber string pizzicatos and crafty clarinets. “Lancelot’s Heroism” is truly epic, and the mix here of instruments and voices is very well done. What sounds like a lone male voice underscores much of the melody in the strings and brass, while remaining loud enough to be heard and yet quiet enough to not sound like a solo. There is a bit too much cymbal for my taste, but alas, that could just be me. Absolutely beautiful strings close out the track, another high point of this album.

Jerry Goldsmith - Hollow Man
|
Invisibility just got a lot more haunting |
|
Written by Thomas Glorieux - Review of the regular release
...
Hollow Man was at the time of its release one of the more average Jerry Goldsmith scores, a soundtrack that couldn't hold its weight alongside the many many fine releases of its time. Right now, it shows that an average Jerry Goldsmith score still carries a lot of quality. I'm not saying it has improved a lot, but it sure listens a lot more interesting. If not the least due to the fact we have powerful action music, identifiable themes, stylish movie music and an overall entertaining experience. In truth Hollow Man isn't that bad after all. Or how today's music just shows us that quality has actually diminished considerably in time.

Thomas Wander & Harald Kloser - Anonymous
|
Surprisingly soft score for a Roland Emmerich movie |
|
Written by Thomas Glorieux - Review of the regular release
...
Strangely, considering Anonymous is not your typical Emmerich movie, expect the score to sound a whole lot different too. In fact you'll be surprised to discover how soft and mellow it all sounds. Rarely do things turn loud and dangerous. The couple of exceptions ("Arrest Them", "Bursting In" and "It's a Trap") deliver a frequent urgent build up of suspense. But for most of the time, we are greeted to rather soft but enjoyable music that often enhances its dramatic effects through solo violins, soft choir or brief playful serenades. The most playful serenade is discovered in "Play after Play", the loudest one is heard in "Will's Triumph".

Jerry Goldsmith - Explorers

Explore Goldsmith in space |

Written by Written by Thomas Glorieux - Review of the limited release
...
I can not deny that listening to this full package is making me miss Jerry Goldsmith more and more. I know that I always say this, but Explorers is not a classic score, and yet it carries all his trademarks, and so identifiable. By far his most remarkable trademark is his creative action / adventure / suspense music. A tone of music that hasn't been matched by any composer today. Just listen to the explosion during "Free Ride" (unleashing for the first time the construction melody). "The Construction" cue itself stays to this day a fantastic piece, and personally I don't mind it not opening the album like on the original release. In fact I find it cool to hear several mini versions of the theme before actually exploding with it in the 13th track.

Maciek Dobrowolski - Clockwise

A beautifully realised score, filled with lovely themes and emotional underscore |
|
Written by Alan Rogers - Review of the promotional release
...
Clockwise is a beautifully realised score, filled with lovely themes and emotional underscore that highlights Dobrowolski as one of a group of up-and-coming composers who are learning their craft with limited resources but who are producing a finished product of great quality. It is astonishing to me that this score has not yet been picked up (at the time of writing of this review) by any record label, particularly when I see some of the material that is being composed for big films that is being released without any consideration as to whether it is actually listenable

Junya Nakano - Threads Of Fate

Just a note |

The CD is mainly nice, fast-paced light music. Nothing unique, but well-done for it's purpose. The Main Theme is likable, and Feeling Good is quite nice.
Fancy Mel isn't really that great: but before 2011, it was only one second in length, and was the shortest track on SST for several years. The error was fixed in 2011.

Bear McCreary - Zom-B Movie
|
McCreary's over-the-top score is an acquired taste but don't touch the "chocolate". |
|
Written by Alan Rogers - Review of the regular release
...
I don't really enjoy Jerry Goldsmith's scores for films such as Gremlins/Gremlins 2: The New Batch and The 'burbs. I state this straight off because, in my opinion, anyone who appreciates scores such as these that heavily feature Goldsmith's use of synths will enjoy Bear McCreary's score for [/]Chillerama: Zom-B Movie. Those who don't enjoy scores such as this may struggle to truly appreciate what McCreary has tried to do in this score.
