I just saw the US release of The Protector, a Thai martial arts film originally titled Tom-Yum-Goong. As for the film, the action scenes were unbelievably spectacular, while the dramatic and plot-forwarding scenes were quite bad. Eh, what can you expect? Rolling Eyes

I was intrigued by the soundtrack, though, and the DVD featured a short promo for it. The score was composed by "The RZA," chief producer of the 90's hip-hop group, "Wu Tang Clan." Wu Tang was known for their '70s kung fu movie influence in their music, so The RZA was a logical choice to score the odd cult hit Ghost Dog: The Way of the Samurai. (Incidentally, the Ghost Dog score is available from Amazon as a Japanese import, though it is a bit pricey. If there's any interest here, I'll add a separate post for Ghost Dog.)

The RZA was brought on (with help from Howard Drossin) to re-score The Protector for the US release. It is a unique and ultimately satisfying blend of orchestral soundscapes, Asian percussion, hip-hop, and rock, available from Amazon:

Track List:
1. Beat You Down
2. Tell U Like This
3. Baby
4. The Shaolin
5. The Temple Fights
6. Kham's Youth
7. Elephant Chase
8. Kham Versus Johnny
9. The Secret Diner
10. The Eve of Battle
11. Power of the Bones
12. Race to the Helicopter
13. Stairfight
14. Brazil

Amazon does not have samples for listening. I was able to find samples from allmusic.com, but it may require registration to use the site, and the one score sample doesn't give much of a flavor for the whole. Neutral

*edit: I added some samples from Cue Records.

The first three tracks are hip-hop songs which may or may not have been written exclusively for the film. The rest I believe are all cues scored for the film.

Check it out. I think it would make a unique and worthy addition to SST!

I found some mp3 samples at Cue Records, and edited original post to include clickable links in the track list. The samples are still unimpressive, however. Rolling Eyes

Outstanding post Luther!

You've got my vote with one little comment: I'm not voting for hip-hop songs. The score only is what I'm interested in.

Same here. I suppose that wasn't clear in the post, but the first three songs on the album are probably best left out as far as SST is concerned.

I'll vote for yours if you'll vote for mine! Laughing

Seriously though, I liked the sound samples, even if I've never even heard of that movie.
Lots of percussion... Cool

I will send this CD to JERIC.
I have been slow recently but I hope it will hit our playlist before the 10th anniversary of Luther's first post in this thread Smile

Shocked

Wow, kudos to you, molossus, for following up on this! Perhaps it goes without saying that I had completely forgotten about this request... almost 10 years ago!

Thanks for keeping up with old requests!

You are welcome Luther!
Sometimes some old requests tend to be stuck in my head, however I'm not sure neither what is the pattern behind it nor what exactly makes them do so Smile
