|
I always found this forum game very engaging. It is quite popular at many forums and I've started a couple of them here and there. It is not related to soundtracks or movies though, while many forum games of SST are, so if it is deemed too off-topic for this forum, feel free to moderate.
Object of the game
The Picture Wars game is quite simple.
You start with a picture (with an object or scene). The next reply has to contain a picture with an object or scene that beats the previous picture. Then the next reply contains a picture that beats the previous one, and so on.
A picture can 'beat' the previous picture in many ways: It could be a bigger version of the object (house -> villa -> castle), it could contain more of it (water drop -> waterfall -> tsunami), it could be higher up in the food chain, it could be able to destroy the previous item, it could be someone destroying that item, it could beat it in a standoff, it can be better in any general way. Of course it doesn't have to beat them in all those aspects. It helps to provide an explaination sometimes why your picture beats the previous one.
Examples:
- Wood -> Fire -> Firemen with a hose dousing fire -> Cork (on the hose) -> Corkscrew -> ...
- Paper -> Scissors -> Rock -> Boulder -> Drill -> ...
Except, of course, they have to be pictures of these items.
Rules and tips
- Obey SST's rules and regulations. No images containing nudity or gore.
- Unless it is very clear what the picture is and why it beats the previous one, include a small explaination in your reply.
- Keep the image sizes small. Search in Google Images for example with the filter size "medium". You generally don't want anything wider than 800px, for people with smaller screen sizes or slower connections.
- Take small steps (within reason). Yes, a nuclear bomb defeats a ladybug, but that's no fun.
- The next picture has to beat the previous picture. A common mistake is to post a picture of a scene that follows it: sleeping people -> red ants -> dancing people.
- Try to keep options open for the next person by thinking of what you'd post next on your own picture. Pictures of someone dancing, or a beautiful lady, or a welder have been known to kill these topics. Not because they're all-powerful, but because there is nothing fun to answer on them.
Where can I find these pictures?
On the internet of course. If you want you could upload one yourself using www.imageshack.us or something similar, but I recommend that you just go to images.google.com and search for it there.
When you have found one, find the addressbar at the top of your browser and make sure it ends with ".jpg", ".png", ".gif" or ".jpeg", then copy that address on the forums within [ img ] tags. If it doesn't end with one of those you are probably still looking at a webpage and not looking at the image. You could then right-click the image and select "properties" in Internet Explorer. The address (URL) should be displayed in that information box. In Firefox, choose "copy image location" or something similar and you can directly paste it from the clipboard on the forums then.
Stuck?
The first thought you have might be that you can't go on forever with something stronger. You'd be surprised how inventive people are when it comes to beating gods and atomic bombs, but indeed sometimes it does get stuck.
When nobody posted a reply for, say, a week, and you really can't think of an answer yourself, you may announce that we are stuck and post any new picture to start all over again with.
I'll start with the first picture:

You have to fight fire with water, right? _________________ It is only with the heart that one can see rightly; what is essential is invisible to the eye.

Couple of great responses, especially from Duc and Tinkerbelle
I guess we'll just... drop something heavy on her.
