Thirdly, news: November 2007
John Barry to be honoured in France:
The French don’t do things by halves and the annual ‘Festival International Musique et Cinéma’ is always no exception. In the past it has honoured composers such as Lalo Schifrin, Ennio Morricone, Maurice Jarre and Michel Legrand, with concerts of their music in Auxelle. This year, the festival’s eighth, runs from November 14th-17th and will welcome legendary British composer John Barry for what is described as ‘an official tribute from France’. Barry will be presented with the ‘Commander of the Arts and Letters Order’ by the French Ministry of Culture, a great honour indeed. The composer will also take part in a discussion at the Auxerre Theatre on Friday November 16th, where he and some selected friends will discuss his career and conception of film music; while the following night will see a concert of his work, conducted by Nicholas Dodd. Joining in the celebrations will be fellow composer Maurice Jarre, who will attend the concert on the Saturday evening and meet Barry for the first time! It looks to be a very special few days…

Wonderful. I do hope you'll post a report (and pictures if possible) to this thread afterwards.
Thanks for letting us know about this, Cinder. |

I'll be there "only" for the concert. I don't know how much pictures I could take, and as far as I know, I won't see Barry himself. Bur if I can get an official SST badge, who knows...
Any other SST will be present? |

In fact, John Barry directed himself the first two tracks of the concert : Goldfinger and OHMSS.
Then, Nicholas Dodd taked the command for two beautiful hours with Barry music.
I can't find the whole program of the concert and my memory isn't that good that I can tell every piece of the concert, but there was Zoulou, Out of Africa, Somewhere in time, midnight cowboys, body heat, the persuaders, and two marvellous suite : one from Dances with wolves, and the other from the James Bond movies, including Dr. No, Thunderball, You only live twice, Diamons are forever, OHMSS, and others.
There was large applause, but no encore (despise all my efforts). But I really enjoyed this concert.
You can see photos of the festival here:

Well. What more can I say? Maurice Jarre was here too, and a lot of french composers.
Maybe next year will more SSTs members be present? |

Oh thank you so much. It made me feel the feelings I had when I went to see Ennio, ok not quite as strong, but close.
That is so cool you were there. What amazes me more is I just happen to post that about Barry, then you saw it!
That is just the best kind of fate!
thanks so much for sharing. It would be an awesome SST event for sure.

I did not understand a word of it. But did not need to. The photos spoke volumes!
The one of Mr. Barry smiling and waving his arm to the orchestra is priceless.
