I was thinking today that SST should have a theme day to honor female composers of film music. I know, some of you are thinking, "What? Both of them?" There are more than you may think. Wikipedia presents us with the following list:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_female_film_score_composers

And one might also consider female songwriters (though maybe not artists), who may be represented in the SST library.

As for a date, I propose March 8. This is International Women's Day, and in the US, March is Women's History Month (or Herstory, as you prefer).

And who knows. Maybe, just maybe, we will inspire some girls out there to compose film music, where their talents are needed. Or we'll just enjoy listening to Rachel Portman the whole day. Anyway, I think it would be fun.

Comments?

Here is a list of the female composers I found in the SST library. Let me know if I missed anyone:

I'm all for it, but I'm wondering whether we have enough of them in the SST Library to make a Theme Day out of it...

We could try. Even if it where not to be a full
24hour long playlist. The playlist is still being brought back up little by little so I cant put together the whole list yet.

Part of the greats.. Debbie Wiseman and Rachel Portman. Debbie's work can melt anyone's heart as will Rachel's. Both easily make my favorite list of composers. Making it an all Wiseman and Portman
day, I'd be a happy camper.

But there's more...
Anne Dudley, Cynthia Miller, Shirley Walker

Lisa Gerrard , has colaborated on many projects. Oh and Enya, and the group Clannad.

And how much work has this lady done in the world of film music! wow

Might want to scratch Andrea Morricone off the list as he is the son of Ennio Morricone. Wink

I think it is a wonderful idea to honor female composers and think for the most part Techo covered most of the female composers (only one off the top of my head right now that I would add is Deborah Lurie). However, my idea of a theme day is a theme that can be focused on for an entire day with requests. Yeah, I may be getting nitpicky, but I don't think on the whole there should be a ton of theme days and if there are it should be sustainable with requests for an entire day.

That being said I think it would be good to designate the day Ladyinque mentioned as something like "Female Composer Appreciation Day" and then people can select music from a female composer if they like, but not necessarily a 'theme' day. Like I said a bit nitpicky, but that is just my feedback.

Excellent idea LadyInque!

I'd like to add Yoko KANNO (Macross Plus, Cowboy Bebop, Escaflowne, ...), Yuki KAJIURA (Hack/Sign, Noir, ...), Michiru OSHIMA (ICO, Arc the Lad, Godzilla, ...) and Dolce Triade (Last Exile).

Did anyone know they were women? Wink

Nate, in my experience, Theme Days have never been a 24-hour thing. Some people don't care for the theme, or really want to request something off-topic, so they do. It's not fair to say it can't be a "theme day " just because you can't get behind it for the whole playlist. Don't make me go all Title IX on you. Wink Plus, this year March 8th is a Saturday. SST tends to be underpopulated then, and I don't know how well theme days do on weekends.

If this did go through for International Women's Day, the possibilities expand. We can call it Female Composer Day, and people can fill out the rest with tracks, I dunno, about cool females, dead or alive or fictional. March is a while away. We'd think of something. But I'd really like to spotlight female composers and songwriters, since it's such a boys' club.

Not a bad idea!! How do we know all of the women composers? Some of those artists have unisex names... Smile

GIRLY's DAY ?? - If a female's day, then a male's day, too. Only as double pack.

What sense should make it ! - Shall such a day become a political statement for women as composers ???

Don't let fall us back into the 70ths last cenutry of of "Feminism" and "Anti-Feminism". Too many mistakes since that time, as a result "Uni-Sex" and "Metro Sexual Man". - We should treat male's and female's work equal. And that way: KEEP THE GENDER BALANCE.

RELEVANT IS: The Music and it's quality on it's on! - Qualitative parameters ! - Doesn't matter it comes from female's or male's head.

Enjoy listening good music ! - ElJay from Europe/Germany/Hamburg.

An alternative, I am not a person who only critics. See my posting here about "Keep the BalancE"!!

Make a Day called: "Who are the Newcomers of young (male + female) film score composers ?"

And present herefore a 50% - 50% playtime of young Ladies and Gentlemen in three or four age groups:

1. under age of 19 years: The prodegies ??
2. under age of 25 years: the real up- and new-comers
3. age of 25-32: They wanna be made (students, 1st award winners...)
(4. age +33 years: They got it ! (music for a 1st real blockbuster))

Each group get a playtime of 6-8 hours. divided into 50-50%, 3-4 hours for female and male composers...

That would be a "KEEP in BALANCE" Spirit I'd liked. Hope it gives you / us a positively impulse.

Enjoy listen good music ! - Greetings from ElJay (Europe/Germany/Hamburg)
