|
Hi SST! Following up on previous posts, let's see if we can identifiy all the best work of Basil Poledouris. He is not as prolific as Williams, Horner, Goldsmith, and Zimmer, and as far as I know, there have been no compilation albums for him, so this might not be as difficult as some of the previous. So if SST produced a 'Best-Of' Basil Poledouris compilation, which tracks would we include? I'll start with the obvious choices:
From Conan the Barbarian:
Just about everything! but seriously:
-Anvil of Crom
-Riddle of Steel/Riders of Doom
-Column of Sadness/Wheel of Pain (especially Wheel of Pain)
-The Kitchen/The Orgy (especially The Kitchen)
(OK, maybe I like this album too much, but I would also add Gift of Fury, Theology and Civilization, The Leaving/The Search, Battle of the Mounds, Death of Rexor, Orphans of Doom.....)
From The Hunt for Red October:
-Hymn to Red October
From Starship Troopers:
-Klendathu Drop
I am actually not that familiar with much of his other work. So what else would you add, oh wise SST listeners? I'm looking forward to your posts!

I agree that's it's hard to choose a cue from Conan The Barbarian, they are all great but my favorites are "Ridle of steel/Riders of doom" (it blows Carl Orff's Carmina Burama away) and "The Search" (btw which version do you have, the milan or the varese?)
Next Ques should also be included:
-"The Katta" from Conan The Destroyer
-"The Scrolls Of Skelos" from Conan The Destroyer
-"Main Title" from Red Dawn
-"Main Title" from Flesh & Blood
-"End Credits" from Robocop
-"Main Title" from Farewell To The King
-"Battle Montage" from Farewell To The King (man this music is good, if you thought conan was good listen to this)
-"The Attack" from Quigley Down Under
-any track from "Les Miserables" _________________ Spotify Playlist Film Score |

I have the Varese edition--probably my favorite soundtrack of all time. Well, it's a toss-up between this and Willow and Glory. _________________ "If I were not a physicist, I would probably be a musician. I often think in music. I live my daydreams in music. Here is what I would add to a Poledouris compilation:
The South Swell (Passing Of The Years) - Big Wednesday
Love Theme (Emmeline) - The Blue Lagoon
Return/Reunion - Lassie
Finale - The Jungle Book
Suite 1 - Les Miserables
Main Title - Kimberley
Relationship Montage - For Love Of The Game (my favourite Poledouris score)
Main Title - Free Willy
Home - Robocop
Theme from Lonesome Dove - Lonesome Dove _________________ "After dark all cats are leopards." - Native American Proverb |

As always, there are some excellent tracks already listed. From Lonesome Dove I would add;
Sunny Slopes of Yesterday
Captain Call's Journey &
Farewell Ladies; Finale (mostly the Farewell)
I hope I don't get any greif for listing tunes from a TV show from the cinematic purists out there, but if I do I'll survive. |

SST has a lovely little piano piece called "It's My Party", which is on the Varese Sarabande 25th Anniversary album, Vol. 2.
If you haven't visited Poledouris' official web site here, please take time to do so. One of the treasure finds is a page with 25 full cues, free for downloading. It's over an hour of music - a gift from Basil to his fans.

Wow! Awesome Two! It would be great if other composers propose some works on their websites too! (But I guess it's also dependent on the publisher's will)
I guess I'll spend some time on Poledouris website and listen his musical treasures!
My favorite track from Conan the Barbarian is Theology / Civilization. I don't know exactly why, maybe because this is a peaceful track (well, compared to others )
Hymn to Red October is fabulous! I remember buying the soundtrack just for this one, long before I became a soundtrack addict
Ah and I have a little anecdote for video game music fans: it is a known fact that the music from Barbarian (a very popular game back in 1987) is heavily inspired by the Conan the Destroyer soundtrack! |

If you are interested in seeing and hearing Poledouris himself, Film Score Monthly produced a video several years ago entitled Basil Poledouris: His Life and Music - "a 50-minute video interview/profile of the composer, shot at his house, studio, and on his boat."
I bought one years ago on VHS (available in NTSC & PAL), but unfortunately FSM hasn't re-released it on DVD yet. You can read more about it here. |

I think you have to include
something from Lassie, like
"Lassie Saves Matt". I like
some of the picks you have
made, already. _________________ All in the world recognize the

Hi, I couldn't not take part of the game.
I personally wish to add :
From The Touch (2002) ST, track "I Believe"
wich I discover on the Fan Website.
I listen to it : Really nice music.

Wow, thanks Two!! I've been to the site before, but somehow missed the downloads. Fantastic!

And thank you, Evan! I glossed over cues from The Touch on my first visit to the downloads page, so I'm glad you pointed it out. "I Believe" is a very nice track, indeed. I agree it should be counted as one of Basil's BEST.
Methinks we should add this ST to the playlist.....

Well, the only place I found The Touch ST available was at SoundtrackCollector. It is a rare item. I posted a request to add this to the playlist.
Unfortunately, I don't have the means to obtain this disc, but if someone does, it would make a very nice addition to SST. |
