Today in chat Ormsby shared something wonderful with us - a postcard he received from Miklós Rózsa in 1972. He agreed to let me post it here for the rest of you to enjoy:

Where do you start when it comes to someone like Miklós Rózsa?
From a personal stand point, Rózsa was the composer who turned me on to the amazing world of film music. He was Jerry Goldsmith's mentor at USC and changed the direction of Goldsmith's career in music. He shaped the music style we associate with film noir. He was one of the first to use electronic instruments (Spellbound). Ben-Hur, King of Kings, and El Cid will forever be the "sound" we associate with grand, epic films.
I hope you'll tell us about your favorite Rózsa scores that you've collected, or hope to collect.
Please post links and photos you want to share as well. |

And just for fun, here's a little tribute made especially for Rózsa fans at SST.

That is so cool! Mind you, I can't read a word of his hand writing, but still! He's such a good music writer that he most definintely has the right to have awful handwriting. |

Wow! Did you make that tribute picture, Two? It's awesome!
I'm on the band wagon here a bit - I love Ben Hur and El Cid - any anyone who did anything to help Goldsmith's career is ok in my book!
But I've also got Providence and I think that's a bit of a different score from Rozsa - it seems more reflective and, dare I say it, retrospective than a lot of his BIG movie scores. There's no doubt that Rozsa was an absolute master and the epic movie genre - I'd like to have seen what he could do with Troy!
This is a great thread, Two! |

That postcard was in reply to a fan letter I sent him back in my commune days. I was astonished to receive it, and it is one of my true treasures. If anyone would like to see the flip side, let me know and I will scan and post it. Thomas Ormsby _________________ A soundtrack fan since 1959.

Aw thanks, Mellow. Yes, I did. It was great fun. There were so many Rozsa album covers with those big carved letters for his epic film score titles, I just couldn't resist using that style to poke a little fun, but praise him as well. |
