The nice thing about working at entertainment media school is the discussions you get into...

This just got brought up, and I was floored! While I have some (sure as hell not complete) sympathy with some IP/copyright law.

This is getting ridiculous...

What do you all think? I'd appreciate if anyone has more info that they could flesh this out, so I won't be quite so dumbfounded?

The whole concept of stopping people from format switching stuff that they have already bought is going waaay too far. It's going beyond making sure that artists are properly compensated... it's getting into the realm of pure, unadulterated greed on the part of the record companies. Not to mention that the measures required to enforce that kind of law take us one perilous step closer to the sort of Big Brother society that we most certainly do not need.

I admit I'm floored as well. The RIAA is going way too far with this and I have a great doubt that this kind of thing can be enforced with efficiency.

But if this kind of thing is put into effect, what would happen to all the tracks listed on SST?

They simply cannot do that. Things like the itunes music store would not be able to exist, and I know for a fact that several broadcast radio stations use ripped libraries rather than cd players to DJ their music to the masses. The RIAA is pushing for something that they simply cannot achieve. Curse them for trying to though, dammit. This is rediculous. Count me in for the floored group. Grrrrrrrr...

greed is to the dark side of the force. Shows you how F.... greedy they are. If they would make music in stead of manufacturing it maybe people would by it. pppff stupid Dumb&sses

Add me to the floored list. I knew the RIAA was full of greedy people, but this is just plain ridiculous?! Shocked

Oooooo Canada... Thank goodness we still live in a free society up here. Here's hoping our lawmakers don't change our laws anytime soon.

Unfortunatly, we've similar projects of laws here in France (& Europe as well) ~ See http://eucd.info/index.php?English-readers

The problem is that many people (politicians included) don't really understand the technologies they're talking about. And on the other hand, the texts are very obscure and difficult to read for normal people (including me)...
