He was one of the greatest film composers of all time.
His wonderful music will live forever in our hearts.
"Oscar winning composer Jerry Goldsmith, who created the memorable music for scores of classic movies and television shows ranging from the Star Trek and Planet of the Apes series to The Man from UNCLE and Perry Mason, has died, aged 75.
Goldsmith died in his sleep last night at his Beverly Hills home after a long battle with cancer, said Lois Carruth, his personal assistant.
A classically-trained composer and conductor, Goldsmith’s award-dappled Hollywood career – he was nominated for 17 Academy Awards, won one, and also took home five Emmys – spanned nearly half a century.
He crafted an astonishing number of TV and movie scores that have become classics in their own right. From the clarions of Patton to the syrupy theme for TV’s The Waltons, Goldsmith sometimes seemed virtually synonymous with soundtracks.
He took on action hits such as Total Recall, which he considered one of his best scores, as well as the Star Trek movies and more lightweight fare, like his most recent movie theme, for last year’s Looney Tunes: Back in Action.
Goldsmith’s output also spilled into television, with the themes for shows including Dr Kildare, Barnaby Jones and Star Trek: The Next Generation.
He won his Oscar for best original score in 1976 for The Omen. He also earned five Emmy Awards and was nominated for nine Golden Globe awards, though he never won one.
He is survived by his wife, Carol, four children, six grandchildren and a great-grandchild."

Rather than describing how I feel at Jerry's death I'd like to send out my thoughts to his family.
And what a fabulous legacy Jerry has left behind. Surely in centuries to come people will look back at Jerry Goldsmith and proclaim him a master.
For me, Jerry was the greatest composer of music I have ever heard across all genres. I can't think of a greater accolade I can write than that. |

I don't know what to say...Jerry has been a friend on many a lonely evening.
This is one moment of silence that will last forever.
Goodbye Jerry.

This is tragic, although I can't say I didn't see this coming (due to his health problems) but I was kind of hoping it wouldn't happen for awhile longer. It will be sad that there will never be another (original) Goldsmith score, as he could compose consistently original, epic, yet moving soundtracks, a feat that most artists can't match.
RIP Jerry, you were the best. _________________ The very best music is usually underrated. |

Loved your music Jerry, to simply say you will be missed is a gross understatement. Thanks for all the good times, RIP. _________________ "Don't you think that idea is a little half-baked?

Even though we all knew that Jerry's health was starting to fail, this still happened too soon.
His music will live on. And on. And on.
It's our job to make sure that it does. |

My love for ST started with Total Recall. Mr. Goldsmith has touched many people with his great music and he will continue to do so in the future. Thank you and rest in peace. |

This really really saddened me. And just the other day I was checking on imdb.com to see what future movies he was scoring:(. Now faced with the fact that we will never get another new score from him is extremely depressing. I really hope that at the next Academy Awards, they do some kinda tribute to him. Star Trek just won't be the same without him:( |
