I was wondering if any of you SSTers were using Duolingo to learn another language. Are you having success with it?

I have a 27-day streak in Hungarian. I don't know that I'm going to learn the language, but I'm sure learning a lot about it.

I've used Duolingo many years ago, in French class, but more recently, I did some of the Japanese course last Summer. It wasn't great, but it was fun.
I do think I learnt some stuff through that, although maybe I learnt more from my Kanji textbook, and from reading scans of a magazine about Japanese. I'll probably pick up all three again when the academic year has ended. Smile

I wonder how learning Japanese, or Russian, or anything with a different writing system than English works on Duolingo. I can't even make some of the Hungarian accent marks.

I guess the way to find out is to start a new course, but I'm a little full at the moment.

We should all learn High Valyrian and be truly insufferable! Plus, we can order off the special menu at Shake Shack.

I've got to say I was glad I already knew how to read both Japanese syllabaries before starting the course on Duolingo (when I started learning Japanese, there was no Duolingo course yet).

60-day streak for Hungarian! And I added High Valyrian and Welsh, but I'm not really pursuing those with any seriousness. But I am rapidly collecting ways to say "I am a dragon," which is a useful phrase, no?

Draig dw i. - Welsh. This is a sentence Duolingo actually uses in its exercises.
Zaldrīzās iksan. - High Valerian, though I had to go to the dictionary for that.
Sárkány vagyok. - Hungarian. Knew that one going in.
Draco sum. - Latin, but I'm just faking that.

Why, yes, I do have another novel to write. Time to get back to work.

After 100 days, I decided to make my profile public, so if you see LadyInque on the leaderboards, that's me.

Tee hee. Duolingo just taught me "Jön a tél." "Winter is coming."

Cal, it sounds like soon you'll be able to say, "Your bear drinks beer." Y'know, if you don't know already.
