I'm not sure how other people feel, but I think if Howard Shore had not won the Best Original Score Oscar for The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King, Danny Elfman would have won for Big Fish. The only other composer who really had a shot was Thomas Newman, but the Academy may make him wait longer for his Academy Award.

To me all the other nominees we're even close to being in the same class. Big Fish is good but I think SST had a better grasp of what was good in 2003 with the SST Awards, as usual.

I think Danny Elfman's Edward Scissorhands was amazing. Yep, he definitely is a great composer!

I haven't checked out Big Fish yet (Ack! And I call myself a fan!), but I James Horner's House of Sand and Fog score has some fantastic stuff on it. Best one I've heard from him in awhile. Definitely earned the Oscar nomination, IMO.

Elfman...I somehow found myself in a private party last month, saw him there in the flesh. So many things I wanted to talk to him about...and my mind went blank. So I kept my distance and gawked.

Then I went in the other room, watched some guy busting out all these classic Disney tunes on piano. Big crowd around, everyone singing along. Who is this guy? My pal whispers to me, "Dude, that's Richard Sherman--he WROTE all these songs."

Yep, I like Elfman too. I thought Batman was brilliant. Really showed off many of his many facets. Another great composer! Somehow his big themes always have an annoying cathciness about them...

I've always liked Elfman's work, at least to a certain degree. But Big Fish made me a bigger fan... I think it's one of his most nuanced, mature works yet.

You'd have to be one deaf'n'dumb SOB not to like Elfman if you're into symfonic soundtracks.
Of course, he has his ups and downs, mostly ups though.
I've been hooked since Batman.

Yeah, I agree that Batman and Edward Scissorhands were great. But then there was a decade without any Elfman scores that really rocked my world... Smile

I like Elfman because he takes chances. At first, I was captivated and then bored. Then, he went in another direction and that sold me! He is versatile! Smile

Elfman is my favourite composer > the music he makes is just phenomonal > i can describe it as something like fantasy music > dark colors > always exciting...

I can describe my feeling better in dutch...
