This is the John Williams score to Alfred Hitchcock's 1976 comic thriller Family Plot, starring Bruce Dern, Karen Black, Barbara Harris, and William Devane. It is noteworthy as being the final film Hitchcock ever directed, before his death in 1980. It's also the only film John Williams ever scored for Hitchcock.

Although it's a less known title, Family Plot comes from a rather pivotal phase in the composer's career, transitioning from rising talent to household name. Chronologically, it falls right after JW's Oscar-winning score for Jaws (1975), and just before his next Oscar winner, the first Star Wars film (1977), as well as nominee Close Encounters (also 1977). Thematically there are already suggestions of "what is to come" and one can hear hints of E.T., Indy, Eastwick, Harry Potter, and more familiar titles here in Family Plot.
The CD itself is a 2010 release on the Varese Club label (by Varese Sarabande Records), in a limited run of 5K copies. The soundtrack did not get a proper vinyl LP release at the time of the film, and it has not seen a prior digital release either. So excepting a few track inclusions on compilations over the years, most of the material is making its commercial debut here.
Samples:
- The Varese site (link above) has audio samples for 5 tracks.
- Screen Archives (also linked above) has samples for the same 5 tracks, in a slightly more user-friendly player imo.
- The Amazon page has no samples for this specific album, but there is a sample of the "End Titles" track on a JW cover compilation, here, #3-08. Please keep in mind, though, that this is NOT the original recording.
- Like Amazon, iTunes does not have the full score but you can hear the "End Titles" track on the same compilation, here. Again, this one is only a cover but should at least give an idea of the material.
Price:
Since budget is always a consideration, I will also mention: at present Amazon only offers this through third-party sellers & so it may look kind of pricey there. However, the album is available directly from the Varese website, at link above, still for the $19.98 base price.
I think this album would make a nice addition to the SST library -- and I don't just say that as a JW junkie. He's one of the most recognizable composers in the world, and this comes from a particularly productive era in his career. I also think there's probably some historical interest as well with this particular director. Many older Hitchcock films -- not to mention many older John Williams scores -- either are unpublished in any digital format or, if released at some point, are now OOP... and asking prices even for used copies are insanely high. As much as I'd love to see them all added, I appreciate that at 50-60 bucks apiece it's not so feasible. But this one could be added to the catalog for a rather more reasonable cost while it's still available. |
