James Horner, Kuk Harrell James Horner, Simon Franglen - Avatar
Great Horner Score
By: tinkerbelle
Date: 2 Jan 2010
Rating:

I haven’t seen the movie yet, but I got this score from a friend…

… and I was captured almost from the first tunes I listened to. I believe this score might be among Horner’s best!
Horner uses a beautifully done leitmotif which he repeats permanently, but he varies it quite masterfully and it never gets boring. The music is wonderfully ambient, magical and mysterious – and just listening to it tells a story!

I particularly like track 3 - “Pure Spirits Of The Forest” – a harmonic and subdued weave of sounds that culminates into an awesome drumline and glides back into quiet waters again.
Track 7 – “Jake’s First Flight” - made me feel like gliding myself and being part of his flight.
Track 13 – “War” may be the best track – an impetus of emotions – the musically painted picture of a war (with an impressive chorus line) that dissolves into pure beauty.
The theme song, done by Leona Lewis, is a perfect ending end equally magical.

I have found only a faint resemblance to the Titanic score, and just a bit of “Braveheart” (both are great scores) - It’s a unique Horner …

John Williams, Leslie Bricusse John Williams - Hook
An underrated masterpiece
By: tinkerbelle
Date: 17 Dec 2009
Rating:

John Williams is known for his bombastic and impulsive works like Star Wars or Indiana Jones. But with the Score for Hook he mixes these stylistics with easily coherent, catchy melodies that make you think you’re floating through Neverland as you’re listening.

Every track is a new surprise – be it the heroic "Prologue", the playful “Flight to Neverland”, the fanciful “Banquet”, the triumphant “Presenting the Hook” with his wind instrumentation or the heartwarming song “When you’re alone” with all his feeling.

The music comes like a wave, never ending and becoming more forceful and warm with every track, giving that feeling of familiarity …

I admit, some passages remind of “Home alone”, "Harry Potter" and even “Star Wars”, but that doesn’t interfere, there are so many unique melodies that John Williams orchestrated masterfully.

Just listen to this beautiful score and let yourself be enchanted!

James Newton Howard - Sixth Sense, The
A beautiful sscore, though short
By: tinkerbelle
Date: 17 Dec 2009
Rating:

James Newton-Howard created a very sensitive, serene and dense composition for the story of a boy who sees ghosts. He mostly uses the rich range of conventional orchestration, electronics are used only very subdued.

The beautiful Main theme from Track 2 – De Profundis – is redone especially impressive in track 11 – Malcom is dead. The horror elements of the story are musically transformed in an in most cases unobtrusive way.

And SiriusCreations is right - listening to it sometimes gives you the creeps!

Harry Gregson-Williams - Kingdom Of Heaven
An untypical epic Score
By: tinkerbelle
Date: 17 Dec 2009
Rating:

The music to this Soundtrack is amazing. Although this is an epic movie, the music is a subtly done score of “quiet” tunes, with only a few pieces with full brass and percussion.

Gregson-Williams creates an interesting mix of Choir passages, sounding almost gregorianic, for the Europeans and music influenced with arabic folk tunes for the Muslims. The Chorus-Passages and their soloists are really impressive!

The first theme stands for the Crusaders and the Main Figure, Balian. The exotic contrast to that is the second theme (first heard in “Ibelin”, track 7). Both themes are present throughout the whole score without being changed too much. The song version of Ibelin (track 19), sung in Arabic, is breathtaking!

You should listen to this Soundtrack more than once to discover his beauty!

Rating:

Indeed this album is a Noir experience, the game is it too.
Half of the game is pass in a dark night, full of danger, alone, but with an objective, find their friends.

The music transmits that constant fear/will of win.

As Halo Series fan, I was just an little disappointed, the hard rock lines present in the first Halo series has almost gone.

To see the music some tricks.
Night . City . Alone . Rookie . Fear . Will . "Psicadelic color's" . Battle . Ghost Town . ined snipers .

I hope you like it.

Craig Armstrong - Love Actually
Only two tracks?
By: cosinusomikron
Date: 12 Dec 2009

"Glasgow Love Theme" and "PM's Love Theme" are beautiful pieces of music, which are both very expressive Themes. But only two tracks are definitely too less for being able to represent Armstrong's Score and too less for being able to rate it. It's truly a pity.

Camille, Michael Giacchino - Ratatouille
Entertaining
By: cosinusomikron
Date: 12 Dec 2009
Rating:

Michael Giacchino's Oscar-nominated score to the animated movie "Ratatouille" is definitely an outstanding one. It's a music trumping with its colourful and imaginative orchestration and multiplicity of catchy themes. Furthermore, it's a mix of French voice, Latin rhythm and American mickey mousing, which is truly entertaining. An excellent soundtrack bearing Giacchino's own, unique hallmarks.

Nicholas Hooper - Harry Potter And The Order Of The Phoenix
The series has deserved more
By: cosinusomikron
Date: 12 Dec 2009
Rating:

With John Williams and Patrick Doyle having composed the previous films of the series, Hooper's Score is just disappointing. Hooper offers some appealing places, but the music remains (good) TV-music, as Hooper is actually a TV-composer. He don't reaches the level of orchestration of the previous ones, nor the power and even less a musical voice comparable to Maestro Williams. Granted, the musical heritage of the Harry Potter series is a heavy one, but I'm glad John Williams is - probably - going to score the last two films.
